COVID Vaccine Demand Begins to Wane in New Jersey

Newark NJ, Essex County is preparing to close some of its COVID-19 vaccination sites as demand for the shot wanes. The county has had five sites set up since December.

“As of April 29, we were doing 28,000 doses. Now, as of Monday, May 3, we are only doing 4,000 and that’s for all five sites,” says Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo. “It’s dropped dramatically.”

DiVincenzo told News 12  that the drop in demand is a good thing. Those who want to get the shot are getting it. But he says now is the time to shift the county’s resources.

According to Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security a complex combination of challenges faces ongoing vaccination efforts, including barriers to accessing vaccination, vaccine hesitancy, and denialism.
Notably, a recent survey conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation observed declining vaccine hesitancy from December 2020 through March 2021. Overall vaccine hesitancy and opposition—those who would “wait and see,” get vaccinated “only if required,” or “definitely not” get vaccinated—decreased from 64% to 37%. Notably, “wait and see” responses fell from 39% to 17% over that period, indicating increased confidence among those who were uncertain. These data were collected prior to the temporary suspension of the J&J-Janssen vaccine.

With vaccine supply now exceeding demand, it is critical to identify and implement effective mechanisms to engage individuals and populations that have not yet been vaccinated. Some people in higher risk professions—including law enforcement, long-term care facility personnel, and healthcare workers in rural areas—as well as in certain rural communities, have lower vaccination coverage. It is also important to continue public education efforts regarding the benefits and timing of second doses to ensure vaccinated individuals develop full protection.

  1. No thanks for an experimental vaccine for a virus with a 99.7% survival rate.

  2. I said the same thing until I watched my healthy aunt of 75 years deteriorate over a 3 week period, ultimately passing away after her organs shut down one after another.

  4. People think this is a joke, guess what right now in India Africa the shits hitting the fan big time. You better pray that the new variant doesn’t come here in the fall if it does you think it was bad last time it’s going to be worse because all the medications that we have out right now is not working in India. Don’t let your guard down because this virus is far from done.

  6. I commented about the 99.7% survival rate. I literally do not care at all about a virus possibly less deadly than the flu, depending on who’s counting.

I literally do not care at all about some super scary variant. Like I don’t give a flying fk. There is nothing you can do to make me care either to get this vaccine, no matter how many grandmothers die so untimely in their 70s-80s.

If I’m sick, I’ll stay home. If your sick, stay home. Miss me with that experimental vaccine BS.

How will we know when the vaccine are working? When the survival rate goes from 99.7% to 99.8%????

  7. YES… 75 year olds need to be careful not to get the virus (or any virus or pneumonia, etc. for that matter)
But healthy 20, 30 and 40 year olds have strong enough immune systems to deal with a virus.

Of course it is serious – as are many viruses – and REASONABLE, COMMON SENSE precautions should be taken. But a one size fits all (everyone needs to wear masks, everyone needs a vaccine, everyone can’t travel, etc., etc.) is illogical (dare I say idiotic) and smacks of politics more than solid science.

There should be a set of GUIDELINES set forth by the CDC/government to EDUCATE and INFORM the public for individuals to follow BASED UPON THEIR SITUATION (elderly, health issues, age, healthy, family medical history, etc., etc.) rather than a set of MANDATES that APPLY TO ALL.
