RIDGEWOOD — You will not find Silly String amongst the toys and trinkets for sale in the village.

That’s because aerosol cans that shoot neon strands of liquid plastic have been banned in the village since the late 1990s, thanks to one particularly arid Independence Day parade.

During the council’s meeting Wednesday, the governing body was treated to a brief lesson on the history of the ordinance by Village Clerk Heather Mailander.

Councilman Tom Riche alluded to the “Silly String ordinance” Wednesday during a discussion on a proposed smoking ban in the village.

Mailander said the ordinance was passed in 1998, after the 1997 July 4th parade through town.
