Fair Lawn NJ, A North Jersey community is grappling with the sudden arrest of a local senior citizen following a breakthrough investigation into a cold case dating back more than 30 years.

Peter F. Knipe, a 73-year-old resident of Vernon, New Jersey, was taken into custody by authorities on Thursday, July 16, 2026. He faces severe felony charges involving the repeated sexual assault of a minor in the early 1990s.

The Investigation: Breaking a Decades-Old Silence

The path to the arrest began on May 26, 2026, when the Fair Lawn Police Department contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit. A report had been filed detailing allegations of a juvenile sexual assault that occurred decades prior.

A coordinated investigation led by Chief Jeff Angermeyer of the Prosecutor’s Office and Chief Joseph Dawicki of the Fair Lawn Police Department quickly worked to corroborate the details. Detectives allege that Knipe, who was in his late 30s at the time, sexually assaulted a juvenile on multiple occasions between December 2, 1990, and December 31, 1991 in Fair Lawn, NJ.

Officials have withheld the specific age and gender of the victim to protect their identity.

The Legal Charges

Following the multi-agency probe, Knipe was located in Fair Lawn and arrested without incident. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office has filed the following formal charges:

  • One count of First-Degree Aggravated Sexual Assault (under New Jersey statute N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2a(1))

  • Three counts of Second-Degree Sexual Assault (under New Jersey statute N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2b)

Following his processing, Knipe was remanded to the Bergen County Jail, where he remains held in custody pending a formal detention hearing and his first appearance at the Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.

A Message from Law Enforcement

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella publicly commended the Fair Lawn Police Department for their vital assistance throughout the fast-moving investigation.

As standard legal protocol dictates, Prosecutor Musella reminded the public that the charges filed against Knipe are strictly accusations. The defendant is legally presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
