Washington DC, Senate Democrats on Sunday blocked a “coronavirus stimulus package” from moving forward as talks on several key provisions remain stalled.
Senators fell short of the two-thirds threshold needed to advance a “shell bill,” which would have been a placeholder as negotiations continued.
Hopes of a quick stimulus deal quickly unraveled on Sunday as the four congressional leaders and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin failed to break the impasse. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) also delayed the procedural vote for three hours as they tried to get a deal. Failure to pass the a coronavirus stimulus package could have massive implication on the fate of many small businesses and middle clas Americans.
In the mean time President Trump on Sunday said the National Guard had been activated in New York, California and Washington and that the federal government would provide additional resources to help those states combat the coronavirus. “We’re dealing also with other states. These states have been hit the hardest,” Trump said at a news briefing at the White House.
