Some Democrats are beginning to openly wonder if identity politics did them in on election day, and left them watching Donald Trump and congressional Republicans win the White House and keep control of Congress.
The soul-searching seems likely to continue for months, possibly right up until the next election. But less than two weeks after their unexpected election day results, some are saying Democrats might be focusing too much on urban minorities and the targeting of various blocs, while ignoring the economic plight of working class votes in rural areas that the GOP overwhelmingly carried to victory.

Things moved very quickly in the past two years. Black Lives Matter made it seem like we owed something to African Americans. Every time they commited a crime or had a confrontation with police they expected a pass. And there were protests.
Gay marriage and transgender issues moved quickly too. Already we have school districts with policies that allow students to use facilities based on the gender that they identify with.
Undocumented immigrants get healthcare and an education at taxpayer expense. Many colleges offer them scholarships.
Young people felt that they financial prospects were limited. They want student loan debt relief and guaranteed supports. They want a balanced life not all work.
It does seem that lots of special interest groups were given everything that they asked for. The white middle class was losing their economic foothold, salaries were stagnant. Many who lost jobs are still unemployed or underemployed. No one was looking out for hard working Americans.
I understand these feelings and Trump was there to let them know that he felt their pain. Let’s see what he actually accomplishes.
