Discover the Benefits of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Attend a Free Orientation Session Offered by The Valley Hospital

Feeling tired and overwhelmed by life?
Faced with anxiety and uncertainty?
Dealing with the stress of work, family situations or serious medical condition?

The Valley Hospital’s Integrative Healing Services invites you to discover the benefits of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction by attending a free orientation session from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at the Luckow Pavilion, located at One Valley Health Plaza in Paramus.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a unique meditation technique that will enable you to develop a heightened awareness of your body and your emotions, to take charge of your life, and to learn to consciously and systemically work with your own stress, pain, illness and the challenges and demands of everyday life.

Valley’s MBSR program is based on the nationally recognized model developed and pioneered at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Since its inception at the University of Massachusetts in 1980, more than 15,000 participants have found MBSR to be a powerful means for taking charge of their lives and for enabling them to cope more effectively with stressful situations. The program is taught by Jodie Katz, M.D. and Andrew Shiller, M.D.

Jodie Katz, M.D. is a family physician, certified yoga instructor in Structural Yoga™ and registered yoga teacher with the Yoga Alliance. Dr. Katz completed the practicum in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction at the University of Massachusetts, as well as a training seminar with the founder and director of the program. Dr. Katz also serves as a staff physician at Valley Medical Group’s Waldwick practice.

Andrew D. Shiller, M.D., has been practicing mindfulness meditation, tai chi, and yoga for 20 years. He is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (Physiatry) and is in private practice in Integrative Pain Management and Rehabilitation Medicine. He is a member of The Valley Hospital Medical Staff.

Both instructors have done basic and advanced training in MBSR in the Mindfulness-based Professional Education and Training Program at the Center of Mindfulness in Medicine at University of Massachusetts Medical Center.

The next 8-week program runs from January 22 through March 12, and includes weekly sessions on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m., and an all-day session on Saturday March 1 from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. All sessions are held at the Luckow Pavilion. The fee for the program is $600, but may be reduced based on income.

To register for the free orientation session, or for more information about the program, please call the Department of Community Health at 201-291-6090.
