Dumont Man Charged in a Motor Vehicle Accident Striking Two Pedestrians while Intoxicated

Dumont NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of ESVIN DUARTE-SIMON (DOB: 6/23/1990; single; laborer) of 325 E. Madison Avenue, Dumont, NJ. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit under the direction of Chief Jason Love and the Ridgefield Police Department under the direction of Chief Thomas Gallagher.

On Friday, July 14, 2023, at approximately 10:48 p.m., the Ridgefield Police Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Bergen Boulevard and Edgewater Avenue. Responding officers found that a 2013 Subaru Impreza, operated by ESVIN DUARTE-SIMON, had struck two pedestrians as they attempted to cross Bergen Boulevard. One of the pedestrians was transported to Hackensack University Hospital for treatment of serious bodily injuries, while the second was transported to Holy Name Hospital for treatment of bodily injuries. DUARTE-SIMON was suspected of operating his motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently placed under arrest on scene.

As a result of the investigation, ESVIN DUARTE-SIMON was charged with third-degree assault by auto resulting in serious bodily injury while in violation of driving while intoxicated, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1c(2). DUARTE-SIMON was also issued motor vehicle summonses for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to possess registration and insurance identification cards. DUARTE-SIMON was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ.

Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and he would also like to thank the Ridgefield Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance in this investigation.
