Ridgewood NJ, the cost of eggs in the U.S. continues to skyrocket, reaching record-breaking prices as supply shortages persist. According to the USDA, wholesale prices for a dozen large white eggs have surged to over $7.30, a dramatic increase from $5 at the start of the year and nearly three times higher than last year.

What’s Driving Eggflation?

The primary culprit behind rising egg prices is the ongoing bird flu outbreak, which has led to the culling of nearly 70 million chickens since early 2024. The shrinking supply has forced businesses to adjust:

🔹 Waffle House implemented a $0.50-per-egg surcharge last week.
🔹 Trader Joe’s has placed a one-dozen-per-customer limit nationwide to prevent shortages.

New Concerns: Bird Flu Spreads to Dairy Cows

Adding to concerns, a variant of the H5N1 bird flu virus—previously identified in human cases—was recently detected in dairy cow herds. While health officials maintain that the risk to the public remains low, the U.S. has already reported 67 confirmed cases and one death from the outbreak.

What’s Next for Egg Prices?

With no signs of relief in supply shortages, eggflation is expected to persist in the coming months. Consumers may continue to see higher prices and purchasing limits as retailers and suppliers navigate the ongoing crisis.

  1. This could be reversed immediately with one executive order. Add it to the package banning paper straws. Let’s go!
