Ridgewood NJ, SpaceX’s Starlink will soon be available for use by any aircraft operator. Starlink Aviation will cost airlines $25,000 per month and they will have to purchase equipment for $150,000. It offers download speeds of 40-220 Mbps. Starlink’s network is significantly larger than all of its competition combined – most inflight offerings are only able to offer an unstable connection with a maximum of 10 Mbps.
JSX, the California-based public charter operator, was the first airline to announce it would operate aircraft using SpaceX’s Starlink satellites for in-flight connectivity (IFC) service. The company posted the announcement to its LinkedIn and Twitter accounts on Thursday, indicating that its first SpaceX-equipped aircraft will start flying with Starlink’s IFC service this year.
SpaceX’s also announced an upcoming Starlink for mobile phones will give customers access to LTE text, voice, and data across the globe. It will be able to service unmodified smartphones. SpaceX was originally hoping to launch with T-Mobile, but the companies have been silent about the deal since its announcement. The new Starlink for mobile website indicates that SpaceX plans to launch the voice and text service in 2025.
