The incident unfolded at 6:38 p.m. when the Fair Lawn Fire Department received reports of a basement fire on the third block of 31st Street. The fire rapidly escalated, prompting a second alarm and summoning all four companies from Fair Lawn, along with assistance from neighboring municipalities including Paterson, Saddle Brook, Elmwood Park, and Paramus. A total of 40 firefighters responded to the scene.

Chief Yuskaitis emphasized the perilous nature of basement fires, citing the challenge posed by thick smoke hindering the location of the fire. Despite the adverse conditions, firefighters demonstrated commendable bravery in tackling the blaze and containing its spread.

Although the fire was brought under control within an hour, emergency crews remained on-site until 9:46 p.m. to ensure complete extinguishment and address any lingering concerns.

In addition to the firefighting efforts, Fair Lawn’s police department, rescue squad, volunteer ambulance, and office of emergency management provided invaluable assistance during the operation. The Fair Lawn Fire Prevention Bureau has initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire, underscoring the commitment to uncovering the truth and preventing future incidents.

As the community comes together to support those affected by this unfortunate event, the resilience and dedication of first responders serve as a beacon of hope amidst adversity. Together, let us extend our thoughts and well wishes to the impacted residents and express gratitude for the unwavering dedication of those who tirelessly serve and protect our community.
