Fair Lawn NJ, the Fair Lawn Police Department recognizes catalytic converter thefts are on the rise. In an effort to help prevent theft and track the thieves and scrap yards in the event of a theft, the Fair Lawn Police Departmen announces a pilot program for Borough residents to have their catalytic converters etched and registered. We are surveying the communities’ level of interest in participating in this program. If sufficient interest is received, the program will move forward and dates will be scheduled. The process consists of an application of a high temperature tamper proof decal combined with acid etching of the vehicle’s catalytic converter(s). For more details on the process to be used, please visit https://www.mastergard.com/catetch-labels
Preliminary plans for this program are as follows:
-Dates are expected to be in the fall, based on the level of community response
-Held at the Fair Lawn DPW complex, 20-05 Saddle River Road
-Your vehicle will be driven on to a lift and the catalytic converter(s) will have the decal applied and be acid etched by Fair Lawn Borough Garage maintenance mechanics
-Your vehicle will be registered by a Fair Lawn Police Officer on site
-There is a 2 vehicle per household limit
-Some vehicles may be ineligible due to manufacturing layout
According to Carfax, the top 10 most frequently stolen catalytic converters come from the following vehicles:

If you don’t agressively prosecute minor crimes, the criminals will learn to move on to more serious criminal activity.
Who’s paying for this. Are we paying overtime to the police to do this, please don’t tell me this is what’s going on. Because if that’s what’s going on that’s a pipe dream. And we have an individuals volunteering to do this then I would say maybe.
I don’t understand the value of these things.
I just priced a generic replacement for my toyota for $120 at the local auto parts store.
