Palisades Park NJ, The Borough of Palisades Park has officially terminated police officer David Chun, following a harrowing legal battle that concluded with a four-year prison sentence. Chun, 44, of South Hackensack, is currently serving time in New Jersey State Prison after pleading guilty to charges involving domestic violence and child endangerment.
The Charges: A History of Violence
The case against Chun began to unfurl in July 2024, following an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. The details emerging from the 17-page complaint warrant are chilling, documenting a pattern of abuse dating back to 2019.
According to court records, the allegations included:
-
Weapon Offenses: Pointing an assault rifle at a woman and discharging the firearm in her presence.
-
Physical Assault: Instances of strangulation and aggravated assault.
-
Child Endangerment: Throwing a ripped-out kitchen faucet at a woman while she was holding a child.
While Chun originally faced a litany of charges—including multiple counts of second-degree aggravated assault—he ultimately reached a plea agreement. In December 2025, he pleaded guilty to terroristic threats and two counts of child endangerment/neglect.
Sentencing and Termination
Chun was sentenced to four years in prison, with the terms running concurrently. Records indicate he is currently incarcerated at New Jersey State Prison with a projected release date of April 30, 2027.
The Palisades Park administration moved swiftly following the conviction. On April 6, the borough officially fired Chun, citing his felony convictions. Additionally, the New Jersey Police Training Commission has suspended his license, with a permanent revocation hearing pending.
The Legal Counter-Suite: Allegations of Retaliation
In a complex twist, the criminal case isn’t the only legal battle tied to Chun’s name. Just two months before his arrest in 2024, Chun filed a lawsuit against the Borough of Palisades Park.
Chun alleges he was the victim of:
-
Retaliation: Claiming the department targeted him after he reported a domestic incident involving his wife’s ex-husband (a fellow officer in Ridgefield).
-
Discrimination: Citing a hostile work environment and failure to promote based on racial and ethnic bias.
-
Harassment: Mentioning he was tagged in racist Instagram posts and forced into multiple fitness-for-duty evaluations.
The civil trial is set to begin on May 11 at the State Superior Court in Hackensack, presided over by Judge John O’Dwyer.
