Hackensack NJ, Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco thanked the Fort Lee Chinese American Community Association for their generous donation of brand-new men’s shoes to the Bergen County Housing Shelter! It is not often that housing shelters receive donations of this kind. Shoes are more than just a basic need– they provide comfort and confidence and represent a new beginning for our shelter’s residents. We are so grateful!
Shoes are crucial for homeless individuals for several reasons. First and foremost, they provide protection and comfort for their feet, which are often exposed to harsh weather conditions, rough terrain, and potential hazards on the streets. Proper footwear helps prevent foot injuries, infections, and frostbite, which can be especially dangerous for those without access to adequate healthcare. Additionally, shoes are essential for maintaining dignity and self-esteem, as they contribute to a sense of normalcy and can make homeless individuals feel more socially accepted. Having decent shoes can also be pivotal in securing employment or accessing essential services like shelters and food banks, as many organizations require clients to have appropriate footwear for safety and hygiene reasons. In summary, shoes serve as a basic necessity that offers both physical and psychological benefits to those experiencing homelessness.
