The same fiscal challenges that appeared in previous years have resurfaced as the Ridgewood Council moves forward in drafting the 2013 municipal spending plan. The major difference with this year’s budget season, however, is the approach that the governing body wants to take in establishing the final numbers.

After two consecutive nights of special budget meetings, in which several department heads detailed their individual spending proposals, Mayor Paul Aronsohn said Ridgewood was already heading down a path similar to previous years’ budget processes. The “business-as-usual” method was something he hoped to avoid.

“It dawned on me that we were going in the same direction as every year,” Aronsohn told The Ridgewood News on Wednesday, describing how finance officers provide budget recommendations, including a proposed tax increase, and then ask council members to slash expenses and reduce the tax hike based on their line-by-line review of the individual department budgets.
