Hackensack NJ, Local leadership has issued a public statement following multi-day federal law enforcement operations in Hackensack, NJ, that resulted in the detention of nearly two dozen individuals.
Hackensack Mayor Casseen Gaines and the City Council confirmed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents executed operations over a two-day period on Sunday, July 5, and Monday, July 6. The federal activity was concentrated around Anderson, Park, and Passaic Streets, a high-traffic area located near the popular Hackensack Market.
In total, officials confirmed 24 detentions took place during the sweep.
Federal Agents Conducting “Public Encounters and Stops”
According to local officials, federal immigration authorities stated their primary objective was to execute specific administrative warrants. However, their tactics extended beyond designated targets.
“Federal agents stated they came here to carry out specific administrative warrants, but they also confirmed they have been conducting encounters and stops in public spaces,” Mayor Gaines and the Council stated. “We are sharing these facts openly, so everyone is aware of this public activity.”
City Clarifies Lack of Jurisdiction Over Federal Agencies
Addressing community concern and confusion regarding local involvement, the City Council explicitly clarified that municipal governments hold no legal authority or control over federal enforcement arms.
-
Independent Jurisdiction: ICE agents operate strictly under federal mandates.
-
No Prior Warning: Federal teams do not notify the Hackensack Police Department before arriving, nor do they provide updates while working inside city limits.
Hackensack Police Bound by New Jersey’s Immigrant Trust Directive
Borough leaders emphasized that local law enforcement remains strictly separate from civil federal immigration operations. The Hackensack Police Department continues to strictly adhere to New Jersey’s statewide Immigrant Trust Directive.
Under this public safety policy, local police officers are explicitly prohibited from:
-
Assisting federal immigration agents with civil enforcement actions.
-
Stopping, questioning, or detaining any individual based solely on their perceived or actual immigration status.
By openly sharing these details, municipal leaders aim to maintain transparency and ensure all residents are accurately informed about law enforcement boundaries within the community.

Hackensack NJ Bergen County News ICE Activity Local Government Community Safety Public Statement

Democrat stupidity.
Don’t talk to ICE because that’s good politics for them.
So ICE simply pulls up to the market and arrests every illegal.
Target rich environment.
