End of an Era: The Coach House Diner in Hackensack Closes Its Doors After 40 Years
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Hackensack NJ, North Jersey has lost one of its most iconic neon landmarks. The Coach House Diner, a staple of the Route 4 landscape in Hackensack for nearly four decades, has officially and permanently closed its doors.
For generations of Bergen County residents, the Coach House wasn’t just a restaurant; it was a 24/7 sanctuary for post-prom milkshakes, late-night disco fries, and Sunday morning pancakes. As of April 16, 2026, the lights have gone dark on this local institution.
A Heartfelt Farewell to a Hackensack Staple
The news broke quietly but hit hard. A simple white sign taped to the front door of the Route 4 East establishment delivered the final word to stunned regulars:
âThis is a notice of permanent closure. Thank you for your loyalty and support. It has meant everything to us. Weâve been honored to serve you and be a part of this community.â
The closure was immediate; the doors are locked, and the restaurant’s official website has already been taken offline.
40 Years of “Diner Classics”
Since the 1980s, the Coach House served as a reliable 24-hour hub in a fast-paced region. Its massive menu was a tribute to the quintessential New Jersey diner experience, featuring:
-
Late-Night Legends: Disco fries, oversized cheeseburgers, and specialty wraps.
-
Breakfast Any Time: Towering stacks of pancakes and classic omelets.
-
The Bakery Case: A rotating selection of pies and cakes that greeted every guest at the entrance.
Where to Go Now? Remaining 24/7 Diners in North Jersey
With the loss of the Coach House, the list of true 24-hour North Jersey diners is shrinking. If you’re looking for that midnight meal, these local favorites are still keeping the lights on:
-
Chit Chat Diner (Hackensack): Located just down the road, known for its whimsical decor and massive menu.
-
State Line Diner (Mahwah): A border-town favorite for commuters and locals alike.
-
Parkway Diner (Elmwood Park): A classic spot with easy access to the GSP.
-
Land & Sea Restaurant (Fair Lawn): A long-standing staple for late-night seafood and comfort food.

That place has been going down for the past 10 years. I was in it five years ago and it was filthy and the food wasnât that good somebody needs to buy it. Take it over clean it update it. Iâm sure theyâll do very well.
It’ll be missed, for a minute, just like the Fireplace which now has people lining up for chicken nuggets and thinking “what used to be here?”
Not for nothing, I still miss the fireplace!
The fireplace was good, the food was good, the place was clean, nice people, plenty of parking, obviously they were doing something right they werenât business for a very long time. Now you look at all these fast food joints, most of them suck. Itâs all processed shit. And itâs not cheap. For that price youâre better off going into a diner and needing a halfway decent meal. Thereâs a few diners on 17 that is still good.
It’s a whole different generation now. Diners aren’t doing it for them.
