Tenafly NJ, Edan Alexander, a Tenafly High School graduate, has been held hostage by Hamas since the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel. According to reports from the New York Times and Times of Israel, the terror group announced on Friday that it may release him, along with the bodies of four other dual nationals.
Captured During Military Service
Alexander was serving in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) near the Gaza Strip when Hamas militants kidnapped him. Initially reported missing, his capture was later confirmed. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy spoke at a vigil in Hoboken shortly after the attack, expressing hope for his safe return.
“We pray for his swift, safe return, and we pray for every family in New Jersey and across the country with loved ones who are still unaccounted for,” Murphy said in 2023.
The Devastating October 7 Attack
The October 7 attack, carried out by Hamas, resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, including children and civilians. Hundreds were kidnapped, among them a mother and her children who were later found killed.
The bloodiest day in Israel in 50 years, the attack included a massacre at a music festival, where over 200 concertgoers were murdered, according to international media reports.
Potential Release of Hostages
Hamas has indicated plans to release Alexander along with the bodies of four individuals with dual citizenship. The announcement has sparked international attention, with families of hostages continuing to plead for the safe return of their loved ones.
