Ridgewood NJ, happy Father’s day from the staff of the Ridgewood blog! Father’s Day is a celebration dedicated to honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood. Its history and origin can be traced back to early 20th century America. The exact origin of Father’s Day is a matter of debate, as there are a few different theories.

One theory suggests that the idea of Father’s Day can be attributed to Sonora Smart Dodd, a woman from Spokane, Washington. In 1909, inspired by a Mother’s Day sermon, Dodd wanted to create a similar holiday to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children on his own. She proposed June 5th, her father’s birthday, as the day to celebrate fathers. However, due to insufficient time for preparation, the celebration was postponed to the third Sunday in June. The first Father’s Day celebration was held on June 19, 1910, in Spokane.

Another theory suggests that Father’s Day originated independently in Fairmont, West Virginia. A church there, the Central United Methodist Church, held a Father’s Day service on July 5, 1908, in memory of the 361 men who had died in the Monongah mining disaster in December 1907. This event was organized by Grace Golden Clayton, who wanted to honor the fathers who lost their lives in the disaster and to provide support to their families.

Regardless of its exact origins, the idea of Father’s Day gained popularity gradually over the years. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day, but it wasn’t until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law officially recognizing Father’s Day as a national holiday in the United States, to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June each year.

Father’s Day has since spread beyond the United States and is celebrated in various countries around the world, although the dates and traditions may differ. It has become a day to express love, appreciation, and gratitude to fathers and father figures for their roles and contributions to the family.
