Port Newark NJ, in a major labor action that could disrupt supply chains nationwide, over 45,000 dockworkers across 36 East and Gulf Coast ports went on strike early this morning after their contract expired, marking the first such strike in the U.S. since 1977.
The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), representing dockworkers, and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), which represents port operators, have been at an impasse since June. The union is demanding higher wages and reduced automation, while the alliance is pushing for increased technology to boost efficiency and cut costs.
Union leaders are reportedly calling for a $5 per hour wage increase annually for six years, whereas the alliance has countered with a $2.50 per hour raise each year. Currently, dockworkers with six or more years of experience can earn up to $39 an hour. The workers are also concerned that further automation could lead to significant job losses, a key sticking point in the stalled negotiations.
East and Gulf Coast ports are critical to the U.S. economy, handling over 68% of containerized exports and more than 56% of containerized imports. Experts warn that the strike could have massive economic consequences, with potential losses to the U.S. economy estimated at up to $5 billion per day.
While the Taft-Hartley Act gives the President the authority to intervene in certain labor disputes, President Joe Biden already weekend politically has indicated that he does not plan to invoke this nearly 80-year-old law to order workers back to their jobs, leaving the outcome of the strike uncertain.
With the strike now underway, businesses, consumers, and the shipping industry alike are bracing for potential supply chain disruptions and delays across the country.

They are against automation.. and efficiency. Thats all you need to know
I remember the same bullshit when the railroads with diesel engines were required to have ‘firemen’ on board… that was the job to shovel coal.. rather than retrain them to drive the train they get paid to sit on their ass.. its called union ‘featherbedding’
Typical union greed. Fox news had an interview with a shipper who stated some of the crane operators make more than 300k per year and if they win their demands, they will make over 500k
No sympathy due here
To my fellow friends, I suggest you’ll go out and get important things that you need for your home, because if this strike lingers on for a long period at a time, it’s going to be worse than Covid times. Stock up on non-parish foods and items in three days people will start price gouging. Just remember these workers didn’t get any raise in a long period of time they’ve been supplying the US before Covid never stopped, we took care of the medical staff and first responders with a big raises while now it’s time for the blue collar.
these greedy members just declined a 50 percent raise
77% increase is absurd
They haven’t received the raise since before Covid, can you do that job, remember, they supply everyone, and I mean, everyone, yeah, your first responders, medical staff, food, yeah
yes i can. its unskilled labor. BFD.
5 workers for 1 job. 4 watch
This is the responsibility of our transportation secretary to get this settled.
Is mayor Pete on vacation with his husband? The guy is never around
Dude, they just had a baby. Chill.
that was the excuse the last time he was missing during supply chain crisis
Twins, double chill.
