Ho-Ho-Kus NJ, In an exciting development for the residents of Ho-Ho-Kus, Mayor Thomas Randall announced on Thursday that recent tests following the borough’s $3.7 million water treatment system upgrade have shown “below detectable levels” of chemical contaminants. This significant milestone comes ahead of the May 23 deadline, marking a successful completion of the remediation efforts.

The announcement, which can be found on the borough website, hhkborough.com, and will be mailed to residents, highlights the culmination of a comprehensive project aimed at addressing water quality concerns. Mayor Randall expressed his satisfaction with the Department of Environmental Protection’s final approvals to close out the remediation portion of the project on April 18, indicating the successful conclusion of the water quality improvements.

The journey to achieve this milestone began when Ho-Ho-Kus was among the municipalities cited by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection in January 2022 for excessive levels of “forever chemicals,” including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in its water systems. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the borough embarked on a rigorous remediation process to ensure compliance with the new maximum levels set by regulatory authorities.

Funded by a $3.7 million loan from the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank, the project was executed efficiently, with the borough qualifying for $1 million in loan forgiveness due to timely action. Business Administrator William Jones emphasized that the cost after anticipated forgiveness is $2.7 million, reflecting the borough’s prudent financial management.

Ho-Ho-Kus’ participation in multi-district litigation against 3M and Dupont underscores its commitment to holding responsible parties accountable for the contamination. The borough’s proactive stance aligns with its dedication to safeguarding public health and ensuring access to clean, safe drinking water for its residents.

The successful completion of the remediation efforts is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the borough administration, regulatory agencies, and community members. Moving forward, Ho-Ho-Kus remains committed to maintaining stringent water quality standards and implementing measures to prevent future contamination.

While specific numbers for the April test results were not provided in the announcement, Mayor Randall’s assurance that “none of these contaminants can be found at the parts per trillion standard” reflects the borough’s adherence to rigorous regulatory requirements. With this achievement, Ho-Ho-Kus looks forward to a future where its water system continues to meet the highest standards of safety and reliability for generations to come.
