Hollywood Comedian Claims AI is No Joke

Ridgewood NJ, last week  began with news of a lawsuit from comedian Sarah Silverman and other authors against OpenAI and Meta Platforms Inc. They claim the companies trained their artificial intelligence software using the authors’ copyrighted work without permission.

Then US Federal Trade Commission is said to have opened an investigation into OpenAI, questioning whether its popular ChatGPT conversational AI bot puts consumers’ reputations and data at risk. The probe into the  Microsoft-backed startup marks the first official inquiry into a technology that has the potential to, among other things, change almost every aspect of daily life, trigger the loss of millions of jobs and, according to a not-insignificant number of industry observers, pave the way to oblivion. FTC Chair Lina Khan, who testified before Congress Thursday, has raised concerns about AI before, saying enforcers “need to be vigilant early” with transformative tools like artificial intelligence.

Now Wall Street’s top regulator says the proliferation of artificial intelligence means governments will probably have to overhaul regulations to maintain global financial stability. Enforcement agencies must grapple with challenges posed by the burgeoning technology, according to US Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler. He noted his agency’s staff is weighing whether new rules were needed.

Elon Musk, joined a growing faction in Silicon Valley predicting an AI doomsday, has been calling for more stringent regulation. Musk’s new company  xAI finally put up a website this week. The startup says its goal is to “understand the true nature of the universe.”
