There are so many opportunities to create a successful community board or local news site. This sort of idea can quickly catch on because people like to know what’s happening in their area, and people also like to find like-minded people for support and connections through community boards.
It’s not exactly a saturated niche, either, like lifestyle and travel, so you’re more likely to generate organic traffic and regular readers.
Below, we’ve created a simple guide to help you start a successful community board or local news site.
Start With a Real Local Information Gap
Now is actually a great time to start a community board or local news site. In America, nearly 40% of local newspapers are gone, and 50 million Americans have limited or zero access to a reliable local news source. And in 2025 alone, 136 newspapers closed.
It’s not that the demand isn’t high, so if you pick a clear gap in the market, which is pretty much everything, you can start to gain early traction. Some of the biggest local information gaps are:
- Council and planning decisions
- School board updates
- Local crime/public safety
- Small business openings
- Events calendar
- Neighborhood alerts
- Local sports
- Transport and roadworks
The important part is positioning the site as a community information utility, not just a blog. You can use useful local tools like event calendars, searchable council summaries, business directories, “ask us” forms, and WhatsApp/email alerts.
Choose the Right Platform and Build the Minimum Useful Site
The right platform will be something like WordPress. It’s so easy to set up, especially with the massive library of free themes, and it’s by far the best for designing and uploading content. If you’re more interested in monetizing, Ghost is also good, especially for publishing, newsletters, paid memberships, subscriptions, etc. You should think about monetizing your page in these ways early on.
When you launch, after designing the page using a free theme, which really is so simple, and connecting it to hosting (we’d recommend finding Ionos coupon codes because the site will be content and media-heavy), you need to think about the features that make it a useful site for readers.
The minimum features we’d include are:
- Homepage with the latest stories
- Newsletter signup above the fold
- Submit-a-tip form
- Events calendar
- Business or community directory
- A clear About us page / Who we are / Corrections policy
- Advertising or sponsorship page
And just don’t overbuild the website and make it complicated.
Building Your Audience
There are so many ways of building your audience and regular organic traffic, and with local news and community boards, regular posting and sharing across social media platforms is a great approach.
That said, you should also consider email lists to get direct access to readers and avoid relying on Google or social algorithms.
Pew Research from the beginning of 2026 found that 3 in 10 adults in the US at least sometimes get news from email newsletters, and Reuters Institute data cited by Northwestern found that around 21% of readers in 2025 read a news email newsletter weekly, so it’s a good little getaway.
You can start with a weekly “What happened locally this week” newsletter, but you do need to make sure you add a newsletter signup feature on your website to get your email list. A good way to do this is to add a “Send us tips or news” prompt at the end of every article, and ask them to submit it with their email.
And don’t forget to share each story into short posts on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Nextdoor, and Bluesky/Mastodon where relevant.
Once you have the foundation and start building your audience, you just need to regularly post and share stories, and your traffic should grow. As long as you’re publishing relevant, interesting news, people will read it.
