HR director job should be posted with Civil Service

To the Editor:

I attended the Ridgewood Council meeting on July 15, 2015, to hear the discussion regarding the changes in village government. I was most interested in the newly formed HR director position.

I am in agreement that an HR position is warranted. I am in disagreement with the process of hiring the current HR assistant and elevating her to a director without a change in job description. No one on the Village Council, as well as the village manager, could explain how this position goes from an assistant – actual title per Civil Service “Confidential Secretary to the Village Manager” — to a director without a change in the responsibilities. It is also being elevated to a full-time position with an enormous salary increase plus benefits.

The job was posted as an assistant position, which limited the pool of applicants looking for full-time work and with the credentials of director. If this position is now going to be a full-time director position, it should be reposted through Civil Service for all eligible applicants throughout the state to apply.

  1. well said, another shining example of what is wrong with this town.

  2. Bernadette Walsh hit the nail on the head!

  3. yes it should, and it was never done. that’s why this crew of three bum’s and who ever follows them will be gone soon. time for heads to roll up top,

  4. this town will always be a civil service town. I know the top dog’s would love to see the state laws go down the river. but no the top state law said no to the village. civil services will stay into lock down for life.

  5. It’s not necessarily a case of something being wrong with THIS town. It might seem like we are seeing more and more of this kind of stuff, but that’s really because of the ease by which we can obtain, share, and comment on news these days.

This stuff has been going on for eons, and it’s particularly rife in states like NJ. It’s the way our political systems work whereby political debts and favors are routinely transacted. Complain all we want, it’s not going to stop and the people involved are only going to devise ways in which to operate more secretively. We, as a society, act all high and mighty decrying corruption in far off lands, but we are no better.

  6. yes that is true.

  7. this is a in side scam from the top, come on we all see it.. please.
    tell it the finance crew.

  8. How’s your weekend shaping up Roberta? Paul? Gwenn? Albert?

  9. But D.H., Ridgewood is incorporated under the Faulkner act. Our residents are sophisticated and know that our form of government is non-partisan. Blatant partisan activity, therefore, sticks out like a sore thumb. Residents recognize it immediately, and reject it, as well they should. How can this not have immediate negative electoral consequences? We now know that the previous Village Manager’s firing was as political act as was the current VM’s hiring and her current efforts to extend her domain.

  10. We are better, D. H. Corruption is often outed in this country. Whereas in countries with dictatorships the people have no voice.

  11. Roberta – You NEVER met Ms. Matthews prior to the interview process? Will you regret saying that someday? Just asking….

  12. Politician or politics =Liar all one in the same.

  13. Are we better? If our point of reference for corruption is the kind practiced in places like the Middle East, Mexico, and Russia, where being on the wrong side of a corrupt decision can be a bullet in the head, then I guess we are better. However, while the corruption at home might not be as violent, we are still very much entrenched in a political system that is all about wheeling and dealing, favoritism, cronyism, and outright theft of public funds.

  14. I hope that Ms Walsh will run again

  15. 3:34 p.m. There is no govt, in those countries.

Here corruption is continually being rooted out like weeds in a garden. Whenever humans get together there is going to be corruption , but we have laws to root much of it out. That is why Nixon had to leave office and so on and on. No , things are not perfect, but because of our constitution and bill of rights and checks and balances and laws , both local and federal it is continually being discovered and addressed. Hence the investigation of Menendez the firing of Torecelli etc etc.

Not perfect but mighty wonderful. And those who complain should get out. It is vital that people be active in their govt. For example Bernie Walsh rooting out the corruption here. That is what we have to focus on; being active not sitting back and whining. And being thankful we have an opportunity to be active and change things for the better.

  16. this place is all screwed up because they still think the ,well they don’t ask the one’s that know more then they do.
