Ridgewood NJ, On Saturday February 5th ,the Ridgewood Police Department responded to a motor vehicle accident on route 17 south in the area of Starbucks. A Ford fusion was traveling southbound when a piece of ice dislodged from a vehicle that was traveling northbound and flew over the center divider striking the southbound vehicle shattering the windshield. Luckily there were no injuries but this could have been much worse. The unidentified white vehicle continued north without stopping.

Remember to remove all ice and snow from your vehicle before driving, especially from the hood, windows and roof. It’s the law in New Jersey! Motorists who fail to do so face fines of $25 to $75 for each offense, regardless of whether the ice and snow is dislodged from the vehicle. If flying ice or snow causes property damage or injury to others, motorists face fines of $200 to $1,000 for each offense. There are approximately 500 fatalities in the United States per year due to icy road conditions.

  1. i see ice flying off trucks all the time
its ‘legal’ unless it damages a vehicle or injures someone
    only in new jersey!
it should be a violation if you dont clean it off-period

  2. It is a violation. But that’s not much comfort if you are dead

  3. Did bergen county ,or New Jersey State police respond.
We wonder if those two agencies are doing anything about this problem on route 17.
