Stop the Sprinklers! Is Your Lawn Ready for Ridgewood’s 2-Day Water Rule?

Ridgewood NJ, Spring has officially sprung in North Jersey, and while you’re likely eyeing those garden shears and bags of mulch, there’s one “to-do” item that could save you from a hefty fine: reprogramming your irrigation controller.

Ridgewood Water has officially transitioned into its seasonal conservation phase. Whether you call it rationing or smart conservation, the goal is the same—keeping the taps flowing for everyone while maintaining our local reservoirs.

If you have a professional landscaper coming by to “de-winterize” your system this week, don’t let them leave until they’ve set your timer to the mandatory schedule.

The Ridgewood Water 2-Day Schedule: Know Your Days

To ensure the long-term sustainability of our water supply and manage peak demand, all residents must adhere to the following watering windows. Note that watering is strictly limited to the early morning hours (3:00 AM to 7:00 AM) to prevent evaporation loss.

House Address Watering Days Time Window
Odd-Numbered Addresses Tuesday & Saturday 3:00 AM – 7:00 AM
Even-Numbered Addresses Wednesday & Sunday 3:00 AM – 7:00 AM

Pro-Tip: There is no outdoor watering permitted on Mondays, Thursdays, or Fridays. This “rest period” allows the system to recharge for fire protection and daily indoor use.

Why Is This Necessary? (Conservation vs. Rationing)

While it might feel like “rationing,” Ridgewood Water frames this as Water Demand Management. During the summer months, water usage can triple due to lawn irrigation. If everyone watered at once, the water pressure could drop dangerously low, affecting emergency services and indoor plumbing.

By sticking to your two-day window, you’re helping:

  • Maintain consistent water pressure for the whole community.

  • Protect our local aquifers from over-pumping.

  • Encourage deeper root growth for a more drought-resistant lawn.

Quick Checklist for Your Irrigation Contractor

When your contractor arrives for your spring start-up, make sure you ask them to:

  1. Check for leaks: A single broken sprinkler head can waste thousands of gallons.

  2. Verify the timer: Ensure the “Odd/Even” logic matches the Ridgewood Water mandate.

  3. Adjust the sensor: Ensure your rain sensor is active so you aren’t watering during a downpour!
