Hackensack NJ, in the late hours of December 2, 2024, a fire broke out at a three-story boarding house on Euclid Avenue in Hackensack, leaving more than a dozen residents temporarily displaced. The quick and coordinated response from the City of Hackensack Fire Department ensured that the blaze was contained to the third floor and attic, with no injuries reported.
Emergency Response in Action
The Hackensack Fire Department received multiple 911 calls about the fire at approximately 11:30 p.m. Members of the Second Platoon, led by Deputy Chief J. Taylor, were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed an active fire in the attic of the wood-frame, single-room occupancy (SRO) building and immediately transmitted a working fire alarm to call in additional resources.
Key actions taken by the HFD included:
- Evacuating residents: Ladder 1 crews quickly evacuated numerous individuals from the boarding house.
- Fire suppression: Engine Company 5 deployed an attack hose line to combat the flames, while Engine Company 4 provided a reliable water supply.
- Search and support: Rescue 1 conducted a primary search, while Engines 1 and 2 supported suppression efforts.
Thanks to the swift actions of the team, the fire was extinguished before it could spread beyond the attic and third floor.
Impact on Residents
John Williams, a tenant of the boarding house for the past two years, was visiting family in Rockland County, New York, when the fire occurred. He learned about the incident from the building superintendent. Returning to the scene the next day, Williams commended the firefighters’ quick response.
“The fire department did an excellent job,” he said. “Most of the damage is just water damage.”
Williams is among 15 displaced residents being assisted by the American Red Cross New Jersey region. The organization has provided temporary lodging, food, and clothing to those affected.
Investigation Underway
Although the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation by the HFD Fire Prevention team, initial findings suggest it was accidental in nature.
Community Resilience
While the fire has temporarily displaced residents, the quick actions of the Hackensack Fire Department minimized the damage and prevented injuries. Organizations like the Red Cross have stepped in to ensure that affected individuals receive the support they need to rebuild and recover.
