Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg responded to a shooting in the borough on Aug. 15 and had not even left the scene of the crime when a news story about it showed up online.

After the department later posted the story on its Facebook page, a commenter on the post asked if it was the second shooting that week. Within two minutes a Paramus officer was able to correct the user – there had been only one shooting – and asked the public for information regarding the incident.

With Twitter, Facebook and other social media, it has become commonplace to expect news immediately. Unfortunately with that comes the risk of misinformation, premature reports, and rampant speculation.
