Run, rest, repeat, and slap hands. On Saturday, Aug. 3, a team of seven runners, six of whom are Ridgewood residents, did exactly that for 91 miles when they completed the 18th annual River to Sea Relay, a relay race across New Jersey from the Delaware River in Milford to the finish line at the beach in Manasquan.
For Misa Tamura, a competitive, record-setting masters runner, this was an opportunity to relax with fellow runners and just have fun.
“When I do this with my friends, I don’t worry about my time or my pace. It takes the pressure off and I enjoy myself.” This was Tamura’s second River to Sea relay with most of the same teammates. She ran it two years ago in scorching temperatures and declared, “I’ll never do that again!” This year, they had rain, some humidity, but no real heat factor to contend with.
“It was so much better this year,” says Tamura. Despite Tamura’s own running accomplishments, she is in awe of her teammates, many of whom are triathletes and marathoners. Together, they pulled off a first place win for the open co-ed team division in a time of 11 hours, an average of 7:15 pace per mile.
