Lodi NJ, a 17-year-old high school senior from Lodi was killed in a high-speed crash on March 2 near the intersection of Crooks and Lakeview Avenues, according to law enforcement sources. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that the victim was a passenger, not the driver.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the deceased or announced any criminal charges against the driver. The crash remains under investigation.

Driver Allegedly Speeding Over 100 MPH Before Crash

According to Elmwood Park police radio transmissions, an officer reported seeing a vehicle traveling over 100 mph along Route 46 West shortly before the crash.

  • At 12:35 a.m., police received a report of a possibly intoxicated female leaving the scene of a dispute.
  • By 12:36 a.m., officers were alerted that the driver may be heading toward Route 46.
  • At 12:37 a.m., an officer spotted a car running a red light at Mola Boulevard and Route 46.
  • At 12:38 a.m., the same officer came upon the crash scene and immediately called for emergency responders, fearing the car might catch fire.

Police Unable to Catch Speeding Vehicle

Elmwood Park Police Chief Michael Foligno stated that one of his officers was parked along Route 46 West for an unrelated reason when the speeding car flew past him. The officer attempted to follow but was unable to catch up before the vehicle crashed just over the Passaic River.

“They were so far ahead of him that he didn’t even see the collision,” Foligno explained. “He only saw the aftermath.”

Crash Investigation Ongoing

Foligno confirmed that both his department and Bergen County authorities reviewed the officer’s response, as is standard in potential pursuit cases. Investigators determined that this did not qualify as a police pursuit, as the officer was never close enough to signal the driver to stop.
