Hackensack NJ, a substantial project with an estimated cost of $900 million is in the works to replace bridges and expand lanes along Route 80 westward from Totowa to Hackensack.
This federally funded endeavor will encompass a nearly 10-mile stretch of highway traversing Passaic and Bergen counties, with construction anticipated to commence at Riverview Drive in Totowa in 2027. The ambitious project is slated for completion a decade later, in the fall of 2037, reaching Polifly Road in Hackensack.
Steve Schapiro, spokesperson for the state Department of Transportation, emphasized the necessity of replacing numerous bridge decks, superstructures, and complete bridges within the project’s scope due to their deteriorating condition.
One critical aspect of the plan is addressing congestion issues, particularly a two-mile segment in Paterson where a bottleneck occurs, causing lanes to reduce from four to three and contributing to severe traffic jams and higher-than-average crash rates.
The proposed improvements aim to rectify these issues comprehensively, including upgrading infrastructure such as bridges, superstructures, and bridge decks. Additionally, the project entails repairing, resurfacing, or reconstructing pavement, as well as enhancing drainage conditions to mitigate wet surface crashes.
Other key enhancements encompass the reconstruction or resurfacing of 28 ramps, improvements to drainage systems, intersections, shoulders, and auxiliary lanes, alongside the provision of upgraded guide rails, barrier curbs, and noise barriers in various municipalities along the route.
Throughout the construction period, efforts will be made to maintain the existing number of travel lanes, although temporary lane and ramp closures during weekends or evenings, as well as potential temporary local road closures, may be necessary.
One significant aspect of the project involves widening approximately 1.6 miles of Route 80 westbound in Paterson to alleviate the existing bottleneck, coupled with enhancements to traffic lanes and exits in the vicinity. Officials anticipate that these measures will reduce travel times along the Route 80 stretch from the Garden State Parkway to Route 19 by 40%.
