Englewood NJ, shortly after 10:30 AM on Friday , Englewood Firefighters responded to an urgent call about a structure fire in the 200 block of Walton Street. The fire, which broke out in an unoccupied home, quickly engulfed the second floor, presenting a formidable challenge for the responding units.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered intense heat and thick smoke, making an interior attack nearly impossible. Despite their efforts, they were forced to retreat and switch to a defensive strategy, combating the blaze from the exterior. A second alarm was sounded, summoning mutual aid from surrounding towns to assist in the operation.
Chief Jeff Kaplan reported that the call for the fire came in at 10:39 AM. The flames had already spread through the roof by the time firefighters arrived. Efforts to extinguish the fire were further complicated by malfunctioning hydrants, which left the firefighters momentarily without water.
The fire, which escalated to a three-alarm event, drew a substantial response from local and neighboring fire companies. Thankfully, nobody was home at the time, and no injuries were reported.
As firefighters worked diligently to bring the situation under control, heavy smoke billowed from the structure, visible from a significant distance. The fire was eventually contained and extinguished from the exterior, but the house sustained serious damage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though it is not considered suspicious at this time. The incident underscores the bravery and quick response of Englewood’s firefighters and their mutual aid partners in handling a potentially devastating situation.
