Ridgewood NJ, Colossal Biosciences, a biotechnology startup based in Texas, made a groundbreaking announcement yesterday regarding their successful transformation of elephant cells into an embryo-like state—a significant milestone in their endeavor to recreate woolly mammoths that have long been extinct.
The roots of this approach can be traced back to 2006 when Nobel Prize-winning research demonstrated that mouse cells could be reverted into stem cells resembling embryos, capable of developing into various types of tissue. While this process has been successful in humans, monkeys, and leopards, applying it to elephant cells proved challenging due to elephants’ inherent resistance to cancer. However, the team has now achieved a breakthrough by generating embryo-like cells with the potential to form elephant tissue such as hair or blood. Utilizing these cells, the company aims to conduct experiments with tissue samples and identify genetic modifications necessary to imbue Asian elephants with mammoth-like characteristics, including their iconic shaggy hair.
While the prospect of a living, mammoth-like elephant remains several years away, scientists have already made strides in this field, having successfully created mammoth meatballs in the interim.
