Fort Lee NJ, at least two new measles cases have been reported in New Jersey, linked to an unvaccinated Bergen County patient who recently exposed hospital staff and patients at multiple healthcare facilities, according to state health officials.

New Measles Cases and Exposure Details

The two newly infected individuals, who were also unvaccinated, had close contact with the original patient. However, it remains unclear whether their exposure occurred at a hospital, urgent care center, or elsewhere. All three individuals are currently in quarantine.

The original patient, who had recently traveled abroad, visited several medical facilities while contagious, potentially exposing over 121 people.

Timeline of Possible Measles Exposure Locations:

  • Feb. 8 | 12:15 – 4 p.m.PromptMD Urgent Care, Fort Lee
  • Feb. 9 | 11:30 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.Englewood Hospital Emergency Department
  • Feb. 9 | 7 – 9 p.m.Hackensack University Medical Center

The patient developed a rash on Feb. 9, the day after visiting the urgent care center, and was later confirmed to have measles through PCR testing.

State Health Officials Warn of Potential Outbreak

The New Jersey Health Department is closely monitoring the situation as symptoms could develop in exposed individuals until March 6.

This comes amid a larger measles outbreak in West Texas, where the virus has infected at least 124 people and caused one death. Cases have also been reported in New York, Georgia, Alaska, Rhode Island, and New Mexico.

What You Need to Know About Measles

Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through coughing, sneezing, or touching infected surfaces. It can lead to severe complications, including:

Pneumonia
Brain swelling (encephalitis)
Hospitalization
Death in severe cases

While mass vaccinations since 1963 have significantly reduced measles cases in the U.S., outbreaks still occur due to unvaccinated individuals.
