Allendale NJ, White-tailed deer are a familiar sight across New Jersey, from fields to forests and even suburban backyards. Described by New Jersey Fish and Wildlife as a “major component of the landscape” in all but the state’s most urbanized areas, these animals are part of everyday life for residents. However, one particular deer in Allendale has captured the hearts of the community for his unique appearance and charm.

Who Is Pete the Piebald Deer?

Pete, as he’s affectionately called by locals, is a piebald deer—a rare variation of the white-tailed deer known for its striking coat of white and brown fur. Unlike albino deer, which have pink eyes and pure white fur, piebald deer have some brown fur and brown eyes. This genetic trait also sets them apart with distinctive patterns and sometimes skeletal or organ abnormalities.

Pete stands out not only for his coat but also for his size. Longtime Allendale resident and outdoorsman James Molzan estimates Pete, now a mature eight-point buck, weighs at least 250 pounds. “He sticks out like a sore thumb because he’s white,” Molzan said. “He’s a beautiful animal.”

A Community Icon

Pete’s presence has become a point of pride and joy for Allendale residents. His name, coined by Molzan, has gained traction throughout the town. “It’s really cool when you see him,” said neighbor Kelly Cusato, who often spots Pete in her yard alongside her local herd of white-tailed deer.

“He lifts up your spirits,” Cusato said. “It makes you happy to see him.”

Rare But Loved

Piebald deer are exceptionally rare, accounting for less than 1% of the deer population, according to New Jersey Fish and Wildlife. However, sightings can be more common in localized areas. Pete is not the first piebald deer seen in Allendale—Molzan recalls spotting a white doe near his home about a decade ago.

Pete has become a symbol of Allendale’s natural charm, with residents frequently photographing him and sharing stories of their encounters.

Concerns for Pete’s Safety

While Pete’s unique appearance has made him a local celebrity, it also raises concerns about his safety. Hunting is permitted in some areas around Allendale, and residents like Cusato and Molzan hope Pete’s fame keeps him protected.

The Joy of a Rare Sighting

For those lucky enough to spot Pete, the experience is unforgettable. “A lot of people see him, talk about him, and take pictures,” Molzan said. “It’s a neat little thing going on.”

As Pete continues to roam the Allendale area, he serves as a reminder of the beauty and wonder of nature—right in the heart of Bergen County.

Have You Seen Pete?

If you’re in Allendale, keep an eye out for Pete the piebald deer. He’s become a beloved part of the community and a rare example of New Jersey’s incredible wildlife.
