A New Pedestrian Bridge to Enhance Accessibility

The latest funding comes through a grant from the state Transportation Department, allocated to Bergen County for the construction of a new pedestrian bridge. The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority recently passed a resolution, allowing it to take charge of this grant. As the authority signed a contract with FIFA to serve as a host city, it now bears the responsibility of meeting FIFA’s rigorous requirements, which encompass field specifications, security measures, and surrounding area beautification.

The resolution highlights the urgent need for improved safety and accessibility around MetLife Stadium. The new pedestrian bridge will be constructed just north of the existing one, connecting Meadowlands Parking Lot C to American Dream Parking Garage A. This development aims to better accommodate the anticipated influx of fans during the World Cup.

Why is This New Bridge Necessary?

Currently, around 15,000 people utilize the existing pedestrian bridge during events, often resulting in significant bottlenecks. Attendees can face waits of up to 90 minutes to cross over Route 120. The new bridge is expected to streamline pedestrian traffic, facilitating quicker access to the stadium, especially during the high-stakes World Cup matches.

While designs for the bridge are still in the works, the project will incorporate a robust foundation, concrete piers, a structural steel superstructure, and essential electrical infrastructure, including lighting and a security announcement system.

Funding and Financial Oversight

The $25 million grant is part of funds appropriated by the New Jersey Legislature to the Local Transportation Projects Fund, aimed at supporting transportation and pedestrian safety initiatives. Bergen County’s Board of Commissioners approved the transfer of these funds at their recent meeting.

Any project costs exceeding the $25 million grant will fall under the authority’s responsibility, ensuring financial accountability. Previous funding from the state has already been allocated for various modifications to the stadium to meet FIFA’s requirements.

Collaborative Efforts Between NJ and NYC

New Jersey is not going it alone. The state has partnered with New York City to jointly host the World Cup, with MetLife Stadium set to host eight matches, including the much-anticipated final. While costs will be shared with NYC, formal agreements and precise estimates for hosting expenses are still in the works.

In preparation for this global event, New Jersey has already allocated substantial funding—$37.5 million for the authority, $7.5 million for operational expenses through a revolving loan, and $15 million from American Rescue Plan funding. Additionally, $35 million has been committed to enhancing NJ Transit services to better accommodate attendees.
