Westwood NJ, Westwood Mayor Ray Arroyo says , “Spotted lantern fly nymphs have been reported in Westwood over the past month. You can help us mitigate their presence by constructing a spotted lantern fly circle trap”. Folks if they are spotted in Westwood they are in Bergen County !

Building a spotted lanternfly circle trap can help you effectively capture these invasive pests. Here’s a step-by-step guide to constructing a basic circle trap:

Materials you will need:

  1. PVC pipe (1/2-inch diameter)
  2. Wire mesh or netting
  3. Zip ties or wire
  4. Duct tape or adhesive
  5. Scissors or wire cutters
  6. String or fishing line
  7. Container or bag for trapping the lanternflies (optional)
  8. Pliers (optional)

Step 1: Prepare the PVC frame Cut the PVC pipe into four equal sections, each about 3-4 feet long. These will serve as the vertical supports for the trap. If needed, you can adjust the length based on your preference or the available space.

Step 2: Create the circle Take two PVC pipes and form a circle by connecting their ends. Overlap the ends by a few inches. Secure the connection using zip ties or wire. Repeat this step with the remaining two PVC pipes.

Step 3: Connect the circles Connect the two circles by attaching two PVC pipes vertically between them. These pipes will act as stabilizers and help maintain the circular shape. Again, use zip ties or wire to secure the connections.

Step 4: Add the mesh/netting Measure and cut the wire mesh or netting so that it can cover the entire circular frame. Make sure the mesh is large enough to extend a few inches below the bottom of the trap. Attach the mesh to the frame using zip ties or wire. Ensure that the entire frame is covered and there are no gaps for the lanternflies to escape.

Step 5: Create an entrance On one side of the trap, cut a vertical slit or opening in the mesh/netting. This will serve as the entrance for the lanternflies. Make the slit large enough for the insects to enter easily.

Step 6: Secure the mesh/netting Using duct tape or adhesive, reinforce the edges of the mesh where it meets the PVC frame. This will prevent the lanternflies from finding any weak points to escape.

Step 7: Hang the trap Using string or fishing line, suspend the trap from a sturdy support, such as a tree branch or post. Make sure it is at a height where the lanternflies are active. You can adjust the height as needed.

Step 8: Optional container/bag If you want to collect the captured lanternflies, you can attach a container or bag at the bottom of the trap. Cut a hole in the mesh and secure the container using zip ties or wire. This will prevent the lanternflies from escaping after they enter the trap.

Step 9: Deploy the trap and monitor Place the trap in an area where spotted lanternflies are prevalent. Regularly check the trap to see if any insects have been captured. Remove and dispose of the captured lanternflies by either emptying the container or sealing and discarding the bag.

Remember to follow local guidelines and regulations regarding the disposal of invasive species. Additionally, make sure to check the trap regularly to prevent excessive buildup and ensure its effectiveness.
