Alpine NJ, A newly filed lawsuit takes aim at the Boy Scouts of America and local camp leadership following a horrific incident involving a minor last summer. According to a legal complaint filed on July 1, the family of a young girl is accusing camp organizers of negligence, carelessness, and reckless disregard for camper safety after an alleged sexual assault occurred on the property.

The legal action stems from an incident on July 4, 2025, at Camp Alpine, located in Alpine Township within Bergen County, New Jersey.

Lawsuit Details Abuse by High-Ranking Staff Member

The lawsuit states that the minor was invited to attend the campsite on Independence Day and was under the direct supervision of the organization. The complaint highlights that it was the Boy Scouts of America’s explicit responsibility to maintain a secure environment and safeguard the children visiting their facilities.

Instead, the lawsuit accuses the camp’s unnamed Service Director of physically and sexually abusing the young girl during her visit.

Furthermore, the victim’s family alleges a systemic breakdown in safety protocols. The suit asserts that camp management and leadership “knew or should have known of the problem of the sexual abuse of minors by employees,” yet entirely failed to implement proactive, adequate safety safeguards to protect vulnerable attendees.

Family Seeks Damages for Severe Emotional Distress

The legal complaint targets multiple layers of the organization, naming the following entities as primary defendants:

  • The Greater New York Councils

  • Boy Scouts of America

  • Camp Alpine (Boy Scouts of America)

According to the filing, the minor suffered severe emotional distress as a direct result of the camp’s administrative failures. The family claims that the organizers completely failed to provide “adequate, competent, and effective professional training” to staff members regarding sexual abuse vulnerabilities and prevention risks.

The lawsuit is seeking full compensatory damages, legal interest, overall costs of the suit, and covering attorneys’ fees. Saroya Friedman-Gonzalez, the President and CEO of the Greater New York Councils, Boy Scouts of America, was not immediately available for public comment regarding the active litigation.
