Parking a car on dry leaves can pose several risks and should generally be avoided for the following reasons:

  1. Fire Hazard: Dry leaves are highly flammable, especially during hot and dry conditions. If there are any sparks or hot components under your car, such as a catalytic converter, they could ignite the dry leaves, leading to a potential fire. This risk is particularly significant in areas prone to wildfires.
  2. Exhaust System Damage: Dry leaves can accumulate around the exhaust system of your car. When the exhaust system heats up during operation, these leaves can catch fire or smolder, causing damage to the exhaust components. This damage may lead to decreased performance and increased emissions.
  3. Undercarriage Damage: Parking on a pile of dry leaves may seem harmless, but as you drive away, leaves can get caught in various parts of the undercarriage, including the suspension, brakes, and steering components. Over time, this accumulation can lead to wear and tear, affecting the proper functioning of these crucial systems.
  4. Moisture Retention: Dry leaves can absorb and retain moisture, creating a damp environment under your car. This can contribute to the development of rust on the undercarriage and other metal components, potentially causing long-term damage to the vehicle’s structure.
  5. Insect and Rodent Infestation: Dry leaves provide a cozy habitat for insects and rodents. Parking your car on a pile of leaves may attract these pests, leading to infestations in and around your vehicle. Insects and rodents can cause damage to wiring, upholstery, and other car components.
  6. Aesthetic Issues: Leaves can release tannins and other substances that may stain your vehicle’s paint or exterior. This can result in aesthetic issues and might require additional cleaning and maintenance to restore the car’s appearance.
  7. Traction Concerns: Parking on a thick layer of dry leaves may create traction issues when you try to drive away. Leaves can become slippery, especially when wet, and may compromise the grip of your tires, leading to difficulty in moving the vehicle.

To ensure the safety, functionality, and appearance of your vehicle, it’s advisable to park in designated areas free of dry leaves and other potential hazards. If parking on or near leaves is unavoidable, consider regularly cleaning the undercarriage and surrounding areas to minimize the associated risks.

  1. And how many years does this have to be repeated before folks get their heads out…………………

  2. It’s a no brainer. If people park over leaves just to save a few steps, they pay the consequence. Don’t feel sorry for them at all.

  3. Electric Cars burst into flames even if they are not parked on leaves.

    Progress!!

  4. Good idea.

And don’t ever spit into the wind either !

  5. I used to go to Jet games and watch people slide their barbecue grills under their cars before going in to see the game.

    What do you think happened…?
