The callers, pretending to be law enforcement officials, claim that there is a warrant out for the victim’s arrest. They demand payment via online methods or cryptocurrency to “resolve” the situation. This scam has already affected dozens of families across Bergen County.
“We’ve had incidents where the sheriff’s officer number has shown up on people’s calls,” said Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton, highlighting the sophisticated nature of the scam.
One victim recounted how convincing the impersonator was, describing a call filled with legal jargon and threats of jail time if the payment wasn’t made. “He really caught me off guard,” the victim said. “He was very convincing, citing summonses and fines.”
The scammers appear to be targeting people of all ages, casting a wide net to snare anyone who answers the phone. In just one two-hour period, six Bergen County residents reported receiving such calls.
Sheriff Cureton urges the public to remain vigilant. “If anyone asks for money or personal information, do not give it,” he advised. “If you receive a call from a number you don’t recognize, let it go to voicemail. Write down the number to assist with our follow-up investigation.”
This scam bears a striking resemblance to a similar operation busted a few years ago, where inmates in Georgia targeted Bergen County residents. Unfortunately, similar incidents have been reported in at least two other counties in New Jersey.
Victims describe the calls as terrifying, and officials are working hard to prevent further incidents. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate and warns residents to stay alert and protect themselves from these malicious schemes.
