Ridgewood NJ, New Jersey residents should prepare for a jump in their monthly electric bills starting in June, as the state’s Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has announced rate increases following the latest Basic Generation Service auction.

Homeowners can expect an additional $22 to $28 per month on their utility bills, with increases varying by provider:

  • PSE&G: 17.24% increase
  • JCP&L: 20.20% increase
  • Atlantic City Electric: 17.23% increase
  • Rockland Electric: 18% increase

Why Are Rates Rising?

Brian Lipman, Director of the New Jersey Division of Rate Counsel, suggests that PJM, the grid operator supplying electricity from New Jersey to North Carolina and Chicago, has artificially driven up costs. “The rules are creating something where there seems to be more demand than supply,” he explained.

BPU President Christine Guhl-Sadovy reassured customers that the Murphy Administration is pushing for reforms. “We will continue to hold PJM accountable to address rising costs by expediting interconnection and implementing additional market reforms,” she stated.

“As Governor, my foremost priority is to ensure that New Jersey remains an affordable place to live,” said Steve Sweeney. “The recent increases in utility bills demonstrate how overly ambitious targets for a zero-carbon future can negatively impact our residents. We need to take a step back and reassess policies that could drive costs even higher.”

“The impact of these recent rate increases on New Jersey residents cannot be overstated. We have repeatedly warned the administration its detrimental energy policies would lead to higher electric costs for consumers.”, New Jersey Senate Republican Caucus.

How to Reduce Your Bill

With no way to avoid the hikes, Lipman advises customers to conserve energy by:
✔ Using energy-efficient appliances
✔ Raising the thermostat in summer
✔ Reducing overall electricity usage

For those struggling with their bills, BPU and utility providers will offer financial assistance programs.

  1. Okay, so maybe they’ve artificially driven up costs. However, we are also using more electricity because we’re building larger homes and commercial structures and buying electric vehicles. Did anyone think about this? Forgot…. it’s all about the almighty $ and many people just don’t care. Nothing new.

    1. No not ‘maybe’.
Its forcing utilities to purchase over priced ‘renewable’ at ANY price and they just stick it to the ratepayers.
We have ample CHEAP CLEAN natural gas in PA that should be used for power generation instead of the ‘green new scam’ promoted by Dems
