Newark NJ, A Essex County, New Jersey man has been formally indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly transmitting violent threats across state lines to a Jewish non-profit organization based in New York City.
Cameron Patterson, 34, of Newark, New Jersey, was indicted on May 18, 2026, on charges of transmitting interstate threats to injure another person. The announcement was made jointly by U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer and Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.
Chilling Digital Evidence Uncovered in Federal Probe
According to federal court records, the investigation began after Patterson allegedly sent three separate emails on October 6, 2024, threatening explicit physical harm to the staff of a New York-based Jewish non-profit. The recipients, fearing for their immediate safety, promptly reported the hostile communications to law enforcement.
A subsequent federal search warrant executed on Patterson’s digital footprint yielded disturbing discoveries. Investigators revealed that a search of Patterson’s iCloud account uncovered multiple digital images depicting or referencing explicit violence, threats of violence, and mass shootings.
Patterson, who was previously arrested by criminal complaint and released on bail, will be arraigned in federal court on a date to be determined.
Potential Penalties Under Federal Law: The charge of transmitting a threat in interstate or foreign commerce is a severe federal offense. If convicted, Patterson faces:
A statutory maximum prison term of five years in federal penitentiary.
A maximum financial penalty of $250,000.
Joint Task Force Commended for Swift Action
The successful investigation leading to the indictment was credited to the specialized efforts of the FBI, operating under the leadership of Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Roddy in Newark.
The United States government is being represented in this ongoing matter by Assistant U.S. Attorney Susan Millenky of the Criminal Division in Newark, alongside Trial Attorney Taylor Payne of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.
As with all federal indictments, the charges and allegations contained in the court documents are merely accusations. The defendant is legally presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
