SADDLE RIVER, NJ — The New Jersey political landscape has lost one of its most influential figures. Samuel S. Raia, the former Chairman of the New Jersey Republican State Committee and a two-term Mayor of Saddle River, has passed away at the age of 77.
Known as a “well-liked political insider,” Raia’s career spanned over four decades, during which he rose from a local school board member to a key advisor for Governors and Presidential candidates.
A Career Defined by Leadership and Service
Raia’s political journey began in 1982 on the Montville Board of Education. After moving to Saddle River, he quickly became a staple of the local government, serving on the Borough Council before being elected Mayor of Saddle River in 2007. His popularity was such that he ran unopposed for both of his mayoral terms.
The “Christie Years” and the State Stage
In 2011, then-Governor Chris Christie tapped Raia to lead the New Jersey Republican Party. During his tenure as State Chairman (2011–2017), Raia was instrumental in:
-
Fundraising Power: Acting as a top fundraiser for Governor Christie’s 2009 and 2013 campaigns.
-
Party Unity: Leading the GOP through pivotal legislative cycles and the 2016 Presidential election.
-
National Influence: Joining Governor Christie in the high-profile endorsement of Donald Trump in 2016.
Business Acumen and Civic Duty
Beyond the halls of Trenton, Raia was a successful businessman, heading Raia Industries, a prominent concrete supply company. His expertise led to his appointment by Governor Thomas Kean to the New Jersey Insurance Advisory Board, highlighting his ability to bridge the gap between private industry and public service.
A Lasting Legacy in Bergen County
Raia’s influence was felt most deeply in the 39th Legislative District. Though he famously considered a run for the State Assembly in 2011, he ultimately cleared the way for future leaders like Holly Schepisi, showcasing his reputation as a “kingmaker” who prioritized the party’s long-term success over personal titles.
He is succeeded in memory by the many leaders he mentored and the Saddle River community he served for decades.
