Trenton NJ, New Jersey residents are set to face yet another 20% increase in their electric bills this summer, adding to the financial strain that many have been grappling with since last year. A leaked memo from New Jersey Democrats attempts to shift the blame everywhere—Republicans, utility companies, grid operators, the Board of Public Utilities, even Venezuela—except where it belongs: their own failed energy policies.
Sen. Bucco: Democrats’ Energy Policies to Blame for Crisis
Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco (R-25) isn’t buying the Democrats’ excuses. In a statement, he slammed their reckless energy policies, warning that their actions have led to a crisis that will not only spike energy bills but also increase the risk of blackouts.
“The Democrats spent the last seven years embracing, promoting, and enacting far-left energy policies, that have now predictably led to a crisis that will drive up bills and threaten blackouts. Now they are trying to pass blame to everyone but themselves. After two decades of Democrat control in the legislature, it’s time for a new direction in this state.” – Sen. Anthony Bucco
Republicans Warned This Would Happen
For years, Republicans have advocated for a balanced energy strategy, one that prioritizes affordability and reliability. They have:
✅ Pushed for a diverse energy mix to keep costs down
✅ Fought against extreme policies that destabilize the power grid
✅ Demanded transparency on the cost of Murphy’s Energy Master Plan
Meanwhile, Democrats ignored warnings, forcing through the disastrous Energy Master Plan (EMP) proposed by Governor Phil Murphy in 2019. They promised a “world-leading innovation economy”, but instead delivered:
❌ Higher energy costs
❌ Grid instability and blackout risks
❌ Job-killing policies that pushed out responsible energy investment
A “Day of Reckoning” for Democrats?
At a recent Senate Oversight hearing, even a prominent Democrat senator admitted:
“There’s going to be thousands of people with pitchforks looking to tar and feather whoever they think is responsible for this.”
Sen. Bucco suggests Democrats should look in the mirror. Their policies—banning new power generation, opposing energy infrastructure projects, and forcing divestment from energy companies—have left New Jersey residents paying the price.
The GOP’s Plan to Fix the Crisis
Back in March 2024, Sen. Bucco and Sen. Tiver introduced the “Energy Security and Affordability Act,” which would:
🔹 Require the Board of Public Utilities to consider energy security, diversity, and affordability when planning New Jersey’s energy future
🔹 Mandate economic and ratepayer impact studies before approving energy projects
Sen. Bucco has been sounding the alarm for years. In an op-ed for NJ.com, he warned:
“Governor Phil Murphy has spent years injecting the equivalent of bumper sticker simplicity into our state’s complex, non-partisan energy systems – gambling with our future gas and electric bills to appease far-left activist allies.”
Now, as residents brace for yet another massive electric bill increase, the question remains: Will Democrats finally take responsibility, or will they keep pointing fingers?
