NEW MILFORD, NJ — A high-stakes New Milford Mayor and Council meeting took a dramatic and life-saving turn Monday night when a resident collapsed in sudden cardiac arrest. Thanks to the lightning-fast response of local police officers, a man in his 30s was revived on the courtroom floor before being rushed to the hospital.
The emergency occurred at approximately 8:21 p.m. on March 23, amidst a standing-room-only crowd gathered to discuss the controversial Brunetti Organization redevelopment project for the Brookchester shopping center.
Seconds Count: The Heroic Response
As the meeting proceeded, a New Milford resident suddenly slumped in his seat. Officers quickly determined the man was not breathing and had no pulse.
Sgt. Prezmyslaw Boinski and Officer Pierre Hanikeh, who were providing security for the event, immediately shifted from crowd control to life-saving mode. They were joined by Lt. Brian Carlino, Officer Tom Foschini, and Officer Carlo de la Rama in a coordinated effort to bring the man back to life.
Two Shocks and a Pulse
The officers deployed an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), a critical tool in public spaces. Authorities confirmed that officers administered two shocks to the man’s chest.
By the time Holy Name EMS arrived to transport the patient to Holy Name Hospital, the intervention had worked: the man had regained a pulse and was breathing on his own.
“The patient was breathing on his own by the time he arrived at the hospital,” Police Chief Brian Clancy confirmed, praising the officers for their decisive action under pressure.
Community Impact
The meeting was packed with residents eager to hear about the future of the Brookchester site, but the redevelopment presentation was momentarily eclipsed by the life-or-death struggle in the middle of the room. The incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of AED accessibility and CPR training in municipal buildings.
