Kennedy Space Center in Florida, NASA has officially announced the four astronauts for the 2027 Artemis III mission, a critical orbital test flight involving SpaceX and Blue Origin landers ahead of the 2028 lunar landing. , NASA has taken its next monumental step toward returning humans to deep space. The space agency officially announced the four prime crew members and backup pilot assigned to the Artemis III mission, scheduled to launch in 2027.

This highly complex test flight will serve as the final orbital proving ground before Artemis IV targets the first crewed landing on the lunar South Pole in 2028.

Meet the Artemis III Astronaut Crew

The four-person crew represents a powerful blend of veteran military flight experience, record-breaking endurance, and international cooperation:

  • Commander: Randy Bresnik (NASA) – A veteran Marine colonel making his third trip to space.

  • Pilot: Luca Parmitano (ESA) – Marking a historic milestone as the first European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut assigned to an Artemis mission.

  • Mission Specialist: Andre Douglas (NASA) – A former Coast Guard officer making his first spaceflight after serving as backup for Artemis II.

  • Mission Specialist: Frank Rubio (NASA) – An Army physician and aviator who holds the American record for the longest single-duration spaceflight (371 days).

NASA also named veteran astronaut Bob Hines as the official backup crew member for the mission.

“Artemis III will demonstrate the power of American innovation and international partnership as we test complex rendezvous and docking operations,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. “The Artemis III astronauts… are ushering in a new Golden Age of exploration.”

SpaceX vs. Blue Origin: A High-Stakes Orbital Dance

Unlike typical missions, Artemis III will feature a complex, multi-launch campaign involving the world’s most powerful heavy-lift rockets. Once NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) propels the crew aboard the Orion spacecraft into low Earth orbit, the team will perform a series of unprecedented system checkouts.

For the first time in history, the Orion spacecraft will attempt to rendezvous and dock with lunar lander test articles built by two competing commercial aerospace giants:

  1. Blue Origin: The crew will spend approximately two days docked to Blue Origin’s Blue Moon pathfinder variant to test system interfaces and hardware.

  2. SpaceX: Orion will subsequently uncouple and dock with SpaceX’s Starship lunar lander pathfinder for a 24-hour testing window.

This choreography will rigorously test software, communications, propulsion, and life-support interfaces across both commercial platforms before humans trust them for an actual lunar landing.

Mission Progress: Hardware Status for 2027

Production is moving swiftly across government and commercial sectors ahead of the 2027 launch window:

  • The Orion Spacecraft: Engineers are on track to connect the crew and service modules this summer, integrating the newly upgraded docking systems.

  • SLS Rocket Processing: Core stage engine integration is currently underway. All solid rocket booster segments have arrived at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with rocket stacking slated to begin later this year.

  • Commercial Landers: Both SpaceX and Blue Origin are currently manufacturing their respective test vehicles under direct NASA oversight.

The entire orbital mission is expected to last roughly two weeks, concluding with a safe Pacific Ocean splashdown and recovery by the U.S. Navy. By successfully bridging the gap between Earth orbit and the lunar surface, Artemis III lays the direct foundation for America’s eventual journey to Mars.
