Ridgewood NJ, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJ DEP) is taking decisive action to address lead contamination in residential settings by proposing a significant reduction in the standard for soil remediation.
Under the proposed changes, the new contamination level for soil remediation in residential areas will be set at 200 milligrams of lead per kilogram of soil, marking a notable decrease from the previous threshold of 400 mg/kg.
Furthermore, in areas where residents face additional sources of lead contamination, such as through water service lines, an even more stringent standard of 100 mg/kg will be enforced.
This adjustment in soil remediation standards reflects the latest advancements in scientific understanding regarding the health risks associated with lead exposure, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children.
To facilitate a smooth transition, a six-month phase-in period is planned to allow for implementation of the new standards and ensure compliance with the updated regulations.
