70-year old Air Force Veteran Picks Up Cigarette Butts to Raise Funds for Lung Health and Clean Up Community

Cinnaminson NJ, 70-year old Air Force veteran, Cinnaminson, NJ resident Jim Alturo – who spent 40 years working in Center City Philadelphia –  started the “Jim’s Cigarette Butt Challenge” to raise funds for the American Lung Association, clean up the streets in South Jersey and challenge others in the Greater Philadelphia area and the nation to do the same. He has picked up more than 24,000 butts in his New Jersey community in 2023 and has a fundraising goal of $35,000 for 2024.

Lung Association Report: High Levels of Cancer-Causing Radon Gas Detected in about 10% of New Jersey Homes

Trenton NJ,  Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and the “State of Lung Cancer” report reveals that it is detected at high levels in about 10% of homes in New Jersey. During January for National Radon Action Month, the American Lung Association in New Jersey is urging everyone to help save lives by testing their home for radon and mitigating if high levels are detected.

New Report Reveals New Jersey Among Best in Nation for Lung Cancer Surgery and Survival

Ridgewood NJ, the 2023 “State of Lung Cancer” report reveals that New Jersey is 4th in the nation for lung cancer surgery. This means that New Jersey is among the best in the nation for surgery as part of their first course of treatment, though more work is needed to reduce the burden of lung cancer. The American Lung Association’s 6th annual report, released today, highlights the toll of lung cancer in New Jersey and examines key indicators including new cases, survival, early diagnosis, surgical treatment, lack of treatment and screening rates.

Bergen County Fails American Lung Association’s “State of the Air” report

Ridgewood NJ, the American Lung Association’s new “State of the Air” report finds that nearly 120 million people in the U.S., or more than one in three, live in counties that had unhealthy levels of ozone or particle pollution. Overall, air quality has improved across the nation; however, major differences exist between air quality in eastern and western states and between air pollution exposures for white people and people of color.

Ridgewood  NJ, the 2022 “State of the Air” report, released today by the American Lung Association, finds that the Philadelphia-Reading-Camden, PA-NJ-DE-MD and the New York-Newark, NY-NJ-CT-PA metro areas, including all but one of the state’s 21 counties, improved to their best-ever results for ozone smog, one of the most harmful and widespread types of air pollution.

Ridgewood NJ,  Wednesday, January 8, is National Take the Stairs Day and the American Lung Association in New Jersey is encouraging everyone to skip the elevator and take the stairs.

“Stair climbing burns two to three times more calories than walking or running. In fact, just casually climbing stairs requires 8-11 calories of energy per minute,” said Karen Isky, senior development director for the Lung Association. “Also, stair climbing lets you exercise without a gym or any equipment. Just take the stairs at home, at work or while shopping.”

The American Lung Association : New Jersey Worst Air Quality in the Country

Ridgewood NJ, The American Lung Association released its 2019 State of the Air report showing New Jersey continues to have some of the most polluted air in the nation. Ground level ozone pollution – smog – continues to increase across the state, although there were some areas of improvement. For instance, particle pollution – soot – continues to decline.
