In addition to wonderful landscapes and still lifes, several of our professional artists offer the chance to commission a portrait or pet painting. On the night of the Gala Drawing, the name of each sponsor is randomly called to choose their favorite painting. For only $275, become a sponsor and begin creating your painting “wish list” at our Opening Reception, or anytime during the exhibition dates. Plein Air Essentials- A Lecture by C.A. Jerez
Sunday February 26 at 2 PM – 4 PM

Ridgewood Art Institute
12 E Glen Ave, Ridgewood, New Jersey 07450

Any interest in painting outdoors?

C. A. Jerez, longtime member of RAI and instructor of our Monday nite Oil Painting Class, will give a lecture on Plein Air Essentials.

Mr. Jerez was a disciple of the famous Art Students League instructor, Frank Vincent Dumond. In his work, Mr Jerez is able to capture the life of the subject by identifying the essential components of an object or scene and depicting them in the most simplistic manner to convey complete realism without neglecting the artistic elements of form and strong composition. He uses uses prismatic color and light effects to create a sense of distance and drama while capturing the weather conditions and the specific time of day.

Admission fee for this event is a $5 donation to The Ridgewood Art Institute and all are welcome.

Ridgewood NJ, 2016-2017 RHS Maroon & White Series Continues On Thursday, February 2, the Ridgewood High School Department of Fine and Applied Arts will present the third Maroon & White Music Recital and Art Exhibit for the 2016-17 school year. The third of five such events for this year, the concert will be held in the newly renovated RHS Learning Commons beginning at 3:45PM, followed immediately by a reception and gallery opening in the Carroll Art Gallery. Admission is free and open to the public.

The recital will feature four outstanding musicians, presenting a varied program and will begin with a performance by Jacqueline Johnson, a junior soprano vocalist who has performed as a member of the All State Choir, who will perform Tu lo sai by Giuseppe Torelli, Romance by Claude Debussy and The Sky Above the Roof by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Sophomore trombonist Nik Gambardella will continue the program with a performance of the Menuet from Johann Ernst Galliard’s Sonata No. IV. Isaac Peabody, also an All State Choir member in his junior year, will perform Stefano Donaudy’s Spirate pur, spirate, Franz Schubert’s Das Fischermädchen, and Sea Fever by John Ireland. Jonathan Negron, an accomplished All-Bergen County trumpet player in his junior year, will round out the recital by performing Preludio, Aria e Scherzo by Ennio Porrino, a transcription of Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, and Chet Baker’s I Can’t Get Started.

Following the concert, the February Maroon & White Art Exhibit will officially open in the Carroll Art Gallery. The exhibit will include original works by seven highly accomplished students in a variety of media. The work of senior Maxine Earl varies from realistic, abstract and illustration, all relating to her concentration on influenced emotion. Anna Koontz, a junior, experiments with many different media, with an emphasis on markers and oil pastels. Sophia Swanson, sophomore, creates whimsical illustrations and ethereal portraits using pencil, pen, and colored pencil and has experimented with chalk pastel and watercolor paint, while this exhibit’s other sophomore artist Sarah Taggart, specializes in ceramics. Senior Danielle Testa creates artwork that displays emotions and provokes thought using media from colored pencil to paints to photography, and Julia Yoon, junior, uses oil pastel and pencil drawing to express color and texture in her artwork.

The Maroon and White Recital Series began in 1964 as a means of highlighting outstanding Ridgewood High School musicians in a featured solo capacity. Over the past five decades, the series has expanded to include art exhibits as well as a recital featuring only dancers. Musicians and dancers are selected through competitive audition, while artists are chosen after an extensive portfolio revue. Past Maroon & White recitalists include Jonathan Spitz, principal cellist with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Elizabeth Ostling, associate principal flutist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the piano duo of Sarah and Susan Wang, renowned Broadway singer/dancer Ali Stroker, Stephanie Buesser, dancer with Ballet West, New York City choreographer Yael Nachajon, Broadway director Marc Bruni, jazz organist Jared Gold and many others. The list of past artists includes Lauren Roth of Lauren Roth Art, renowned illustrator Kyle McCullough, Giovanni Forlino, whose work can be seen on display at the Getty and Guggenheim museums, plus a host of professional freelance artists who work in a wide variety of visual art related fields.

Upcoming Maroon & White Recital/Exhibits will take place on March 9, April 6 (Dance) and April 27. All recitals are held in the RHS Learning Commons, with the exception of the dance recital, which takes place in the Little Theater. For more information, please contact the RHS Department of Fine and Applied Arts at 201-670-2800 x. 20542.

Event Description

Oil Painting Demonstration by John C. Traynor, born and bred in NJ

Saturday October 22nd, 2016 at 10am
The Ridgewood Art Institute
12 East Glen Avenue
Ridgewood, NJ 07450

Ridgewood NJ, The Ridgewood Art Institute, a prominent player in the perpetuation of Classical Realism today is proud to host an oil painting demonstration by esteemed painter and instructor, John C. Traynor.

Traynor has won numerous awards, including the Frank Dumond Award from the Hudson Valley Art Association and the Medal of Honor from the Salamagundi Club, of which he is an honorary member. John was also recently inducted into the Delbarton School of Honors and he has reached the level of Copley Master from the Copely Society of Boston. John is a skilled painter of every genre: landscape, still life and portraiture.

His unique blend of realism and atmospheric impressionism sets his work apart. Many people can recognize a “Traynor Painting” by it’s brushstrokes and unique feeling. Part of his success is connecting emotionally with others through his work. People are often reminded of moments in their life or memories of the past. His use of light and atmospheric effect is found in many of the Old Master paintings, such as the American Tonality painters and the French Impressionist artists. There is a richness and fullness to his work that is “old world” yet contemporary with his unique style.

Please don’t miss this rare opportunity to observe the creative process at work. This free event is worthwhile to both artists and art enthusiasts. All are welcome.

“Golden Toilet” by Maurizio Cattelan retrospective at the Guggenheim

"Golden Toilet" by Maurizio Cattelan retrospective at the Guggenheim

Photo: Kris Mckay

“Golden Toilet” by Maurizio Cattelan retrospective at the Guggenheim
September 17,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

New York NY, Are you sitting down? Maurizio Cattelan: “America” opened yesterday, September 16, in one of the museum’s public restrooms. “America”—the first piece that #Cattelan has exhibited since his 2011 retrospective at the Guggenheim—is a working toilet cast from gold, which museumgoers are allowed to use just as they would any other facility in the building. In a gallery environment where visitors are usually told, “don’t touch,” this is an extraordinary opportunity to spend time completely alone with a work of art.

Its nice to see a Golden Toilet get a appreciation it deserves .

We often get asked great article ,but what does this have to do with Ridgewood ? The Ridgewood blog was inspired by the “Golden Toilet” retrospective.  Many of our readers have accused the Village of flushing money down the toilet years . Recent projects like the idiotic “traffic easing”, or the over priced ramp at Graydon pool ring a bell but for many the “Golden Toilet Fiasco:  was one of the biggest flushes of money down the drain .The $400,000 toilet rivaled  only the “Village Hall Fiasco” . While not quite on the same scope financially as the Village Hall Fiasco ,the “Golden Toilet ” became emblematic for everything wrong with the Village of Ridgewood.

“I was at the field with the $400,000 toilets and decided to go in and see, they looked ok, but the soap was empty the electric was off so the toilets didn’t flush and we couldn’t dry our hands. I guess you don’t get much for $400,000.00 anymore. ” https://theridgewoodblog.net/golden-toilet-i-guess-you-dont-get-much-for-400000-00-anymore/

Absolutely ridiculous. You can build a 2,000 sf house for $375,000 (build not buy land).https://theridgewoodblog.net/the-big-flush-golden-toilet-outrage-grows/

In later years the residents were even promised that there will be “No “Golden Toilets ” for Habernickel” https://theridgewoodblog.net/no-golden-toilets-for-habernickel/

Government has become a self perpetuating beast; enacting regulations (to protect the people!) which require people to enforce, require extra hours and costs to adhere to them and thus driving up costs for everyone else. The private sector has profit as motivation, government has service as its mandate. Government should not be running businesses that private enterprises can provide cheaper https://theridgewoodblog.net/the-golden-toilet-government-has-become-a-self-perpetuating-beast/

So next time you hear that the “Government” , or “Village Hall ” ought to do something remember the “Golden Toilet ” a $400,000 place wher only an 5th grader can go.

“here I sit all Brokenhearted paid a dime and only ….well you know the rest.
