For NJ.com

With the 4th of July just around the corner, families are getting ready to kickoff the summer at the Jersey Shore — and so are the hundreds of people up and down the state who don red suits and spend their summers perched by the ocean, eyes fixed on the waves, waiting to make a move if any of the swimmers appear in distress.

But in recent years, finding qualified — and enough — lifeguards to fill those stands has become more challenging for New Jersey’s beach patrols. Coastal living expenses, demanding college athletic programs and a difficult job market post-graduation are partially to blame.

A new version of the “MTV Beach House,” last in Seaside Heights more than 10 years ago, will be filmed in the Loveladies section of Long Beach Township on Long Beach Island later this month, MTV has announced.

Filming will take place in a Loveladies house for less than a week. An MTV Beach House Festival featuring MisterWives and Kyle and more will take place June 8 at a park on LBI to kick off filming. Elements of the fest will be shared on MTV social and digital channels. Fans must follow @MTV on Twitter and retweet the designated sweepstakes tweets to win tickets.

Many shore safeguards fared well during blizzard, experts encouraged

THE RECORD

The blizzard of 2016 was the most powerful storm to sock New Jersey since Superstorm Sandy destroyed swaths of the shoreline and knocked out power to tens of thousands for weeks on end. And like Sandy, this storm also caused floods and knocked out power, but the strength of the storm was exponentially less, though flooding along Jersey’s southern shores was worse.

What the blizzard did — most experts, activists and officials agreed — was highlight the effectiveness of resiliency projects built since Superstorm Sandy — and draw attention to where weaknesses still exist.

Since Sandy, beaches in some coastal municipalities have been widened, barriers have been built and municipal officials say they have more and better resources to deal with storm impacts.
