Ridgewood NJ, A Honda CR-V SUV slammed into an occupied tour bus that was returning students and their chaperons back to the Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Ridgewood on Friday, 02/05 from a trip to Quebec. The incident occurred at 3:17 PM on Franklin Turnpike in Ridgewood, near the entrance/exit to Route 17 southbound.
Neither of the drivers, nor any of the 44 bus passengers, were injured in the collision, however the SUV was heavily damaged and had to be removed from the scene by a flatbed tow truck. Ridgewood PD investigated the incident and issued a summons to the SUV driver. After a delay of almost one (1) hour, the virtually undamaged bus continued on its way to drop off students and chaperones at the school. The driver of the SUV is reportedly a public safety officer at nearby Bergen Community College.

Benjamin Franklin Middle School (BF) hosted a charity run on Nov. 20, collecting frozen turkeys that were donated to help those less fortunate this Thanksgiving.
The school’s 21st Annual Turkey Trot, which was started as a community service project, was success again, according to Donna Skettini, a health and physical education teacher at BF and one of the event organizers.
“We had almost 1,000 people participate,” she said. “It is a huge hit and lots of fun.”
According to a flyer sent home to parents of BF students, “This tradition has been a day to celebrate with fitness and fun, while we all recognize the needs of others.”
The goal was to donate one turkey to the Social Service Association of Ridgewood and Vicinity for every 50 laps around the BF track accomplished as a group.
Giving to families in need has been the event’s goal since its inception, according to Skettini.

A recently unearthed time capsule has given its viewers a look back to the days of 1986.
The container was interred on the Benjamin Franklin Middle School grounds roughly 30 years ago and was aptly named “Halley’s capsule” by the former BF students, a tip of the cap to the comet that last appeared that year.
The time capsule was intended to be recovered upon the next appearance of Halley’s Comet, but was accidentally dug up this summer by an excavation crew working on the new driveway cut-out at BF.
Gregory Wu, BF assistant principal, said he hurried to the scene once he was informed of the crew’s find.
“Finding value in those types of things,” he said, “I rushed over to take a look.”
Upon arrival, Wu discovered that the capsule had not been well-preserved, and as a result, some of its items were damaged throughout the years.
“I was disappointed to see that its contents (mostly seventh-grade English essays) had been stored in a pretty flimsy plastic container that had failed to keep the water/elements out,” he said. “There was an audio cassette tape, a Betamax tape, various coins, a ‘Vogue’ magazine I believe, a class set of essays and a few other paper items that could not be read due to deterioration.”
Torrance Watson, a current physical education instructor at BF, was one of the students to bury the capsule. He also expressed disappointment at the condition of the container.
“It would have been nice for the capsule to be undamaged so that whoever unearthed it could read all of the entries,” Watson said.
However, the capsule, which was scheduled to be unearthed around 2061, according to Wu, did contain a few mostly intact items: a yearbook from the BF class of 1986 and some of the aforementioned essays.

A breast cancer awareness fundraiser that took place at Benjamin Franklin Middle School (BF) on Oct. 30 showed that, should enough duct tape be applied, a person can indeed be held by tape in midair for a good cause.
The scene was a strange one, with permanent substitute Daniel Cermack, a staff member with whom many of the students are close, hanging suspended from a pillar in the BF cafeteria for 90 minutes by pieces of pink duct tape. The strands, which were purchased by the students, were the school’s means of raising money for breast cancer research, which it has done for many years. All of the money raised was donated to the Avon Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.
“For the past 10 years, we have sold pink ribbons, pink Livestrong bracelets, etc., to raise money for breast cancer awareness,” said Dave Tashian, a guidance counselor and student council advisor at BF. “The kids were looking for something new. A student saw this idea of duct taping people to the wall, and we came up with an idea of how to make money off of it.”
Each length of tape cost $1, though for $2, the middle-schoolers were given the opportunity to snap a selfie with Cermack as he hung from the pillar like an insect in a cocoon.

Ridgewood NJ, A male second grade student at the Travell Elementary School in Ridgewood reported seeing a man with a handgun at the school’s front door early Thursday afternoon (10/08 @ 12:51 PM), which prompted a full school lock down and response by heavily armed uniformed and plainclothes police officers from several neighboring communities.
A subsequent search of the building and grounds turned up no suspect nor firearm, but as a precaution police also locked down and searched the nearby Benjamin Franklin Middle School. Nothing was found there either, prompting police to signal an “all clear” shortly after 1:30 PM. Police officers from Glen Rock, HoHoKus, Midland Park, and Wyckoff assisted Ridgewood PD units.
Ridgewood NJ, Any of readers notice the giant steel structure being erected next to the Ridgewood Park & Ride? Also, what are they doing at the Ben Franklin Middle School? They ripped up most of the grass around the front and side of the school.
In case you are unaware This bus stop is extremely convenient for anyone who commutes into work, or just wants to go into NYC for the day. The Shortline bus will pick you up here, and drop you off right at Port Authority, which is located in Midtown on 42nd St. and 8th Ave. The trip takes exactly 35 mins from Ridgewood Park & Ride to Port Authority, and vice versa as long as there isn’t heavy traffic.
If you take a bus before 7 AM it is a 35-40 minute ride on the shortline, however, if you leave even half an hour later at 7:30 AM you can probably tack another 10 minutes onto that (and probably another 5-10 minutes more if you leave around 8 AM). These times are for the bus ride only.
During rush hour buses going into the city have their own dedicated lane into the tunnel so you don’t have to deal with the traffic that someone driving a car does, but there is traffic at the entrance to the bus lane off of the turnpike as all of the buses merge into that lane. Hence the later you leave the more likely you are to get caught at the entrance to the bus lane and the additional time I quoted above. For what it is worth accidents in the bus lane are very rare so large delays are unusual if you are on a 7 AM bus .
You can find the link to the bus schedule online (coachusa.com/info/shortl…) or at the little trailer located at the Park & Ride, which is also where you can buy tickets. The tickets are $9 either way, though you can buy a month’s worth of tickets that amount to $6 per ticket. If you want to park your car here, you need a pass which I believe you can purchase at the same trailer. Otherwise, you can just opt to do metered parking with quarters. Either way, get here early in the morning on weekdays, since most of the parking spaces get taken before morning rush hour is over.
Also, we recommend you arrive at least 5 minutes earlier than the expected time on the bus schedule, because the drivers don’t always match the time correctly. Sometimes they run a bit late, but worse is when they get here early and decide to leave early. Just account for that if you’re on a tight schedule.
The AirBrook shuttles to Newark Airport also run from the park and ride there is the ticket trailer all the way in the back behind the parking lot.
Please note to be careful when you’re driving in to the Park & Ride, because the entrance is also right next to the Park & Ride exit; and just before that, is another ramp that leads onto route 17. People often dart out onto Route 17 without even checking so be very careful when entering/exiting.
One more note ,the helix that approaches the Lincoln Tunnel is going through a multi-year construction project. The delays magnify during construction periods which is thankfully not often rush hour . Rush hour for NYC is traditionally thought of as 6:30 am to 9:30 am.
Ridgewood Police report that on May 28, 2015 a School Administrator at Benjamin Franklin Middle School reported a custodian at the school had inappropriate contact with a student during a after school program. The custodian Anthony E Griffiths 52 of Paterson was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child. The accused was remanded to the Bergen County Jail unable to post $30,000.00 Bail.
All defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
